What's the difference between an app and an extension?

In short, APPS are like software that are accessible through Google chrome.  They reside in the cloud and can be very useful. They have a different user interface than the usual chrome screen, but integrate with chrome.  Examples would be a photo editor, or even a game.  These show in the upper left of your browser window under the colorful "waffle".

Extensions on the other hand, do just that, they extend the usefulness of chrome. Examples would be an adblocker,  a screen capture utility, or a bibliography creator. These show on the upper right of your screen next to the url box, accumulating as you add them. These can also be disabled if you find them to not be useful.  Below are just a sampling of what I use and find useful.  Please feel free to send any you have found helpful so they may be shared and included as well.
