Step 1:
Who is this Dewey guy?
Task: Find out about Melvil Dewey. Who was he and why was he important. Discover 8 facts about him and his famous system that he invented.
HOW:
-
Use the sites listed below to discover your 8 facts.
-
Write down your facts.
-
Then use PowerPoint to create a title slide, then 2-3 slides with animations on the page and transitions from one slide to the next.
-
Use the microphone to narrate your slides.
-
Upload your PowerPoint file to your Edmodo backpack.
The more interesting the better! Include some facts that require a little extra reading!
With this project, you are learning to gather facts, use the more exciting parts of PowerPoint, and learning how to upload your files to Edmodo.

Step 3:
So how do I search for stuff in the library?
TASK: You will need to find some books about a topic of your choice using key words to narrow down your search and locate exactly the books you are looking for.
HOW:
-
You will access DESTINY, our library program. If you have forgotten how to use it, watch the video to learn.
-
You will decide upon 3 very specific topics of your choice, such as bearded dragon lizards, or the story of Duke Ellington's life.
-
You will recieve 3 SEARCH LADDER handouts on which you will write 1 topic per handout.
-
You will then brainstorm a word to search for to locate your book. Write the word on the bottom rung of the ladder (search words should start on the bottom being very broad such as "lizard", then the next rung would narrow it down to "bearded lizards" and so on)
-
Try out the word by doing a search in Destiny.
-
If you do not come close to finding a book that matches, brainstorm some other words to use for your search. Write the more narrowed down words on the next rung of the ladder. Repeat this a third time with even more precise search temrs.
-
After you try each search term in Destiny, determine if the books you are seeing are the ones that contain what you want.
-
Copy down their titles, and Dewey numbers.
-
Retrieve the books from the shelves.

Step 2:
What do all these numbers MEAN?!
Task: Now that you know about Dewey, explain his numbering system. Tell what each set of numbers stands for - what categories they represent.
How:
-
Use the sites below to discover how the numbers are used to categorize things in the library:
-
Write down in your notes the different topics that are covered by the 000, 100's, 200's, 300's, etc.
-
Access the web site WORDLE. Create a wordle for each of the categories inputting not only the numbers, but some of the different topics covered under each group of Dewey numbers.
-
Make them "pretty" but meaningful. Experiment with different colors and fonts, but work quickly, as you will have 10 total to complete.
-
These will be used as informative library signs.
-
PRINT YOUR WORDLES as you complete each one.
With this project, you are learning about the Dewey categories and how the library books are grouped, and how to show what you've learned by creating a fun graphic.

Step 4:
Writing a script and making a video!!
TASK: You will be assigned a set of Dewey numbers. There are 10, so we will have 10 groups of 2-3 students. You will work together to create a 30 second - 1 minute commercial advertising your Dewey number topic as THE BEST. Your persuasive writing skills will be crucial to this task, as will your ability to work together to complete the recording of this last task.
HOW:
-
You will be divided into pairs or trios and assigned your Dewey number randomly.
-
Using all of the information you have gathered and created so far, develop a script that will persuade and convince everyone else that your topics in your Dewey set of numbers are the best to read about.
-
The script will be written in WORD, then uploaded to your Edmodo backpack.
-
You will then locate books in your Dewey assigned topic - use a variety. These will be used while you record your commericial as props and to reference to make the video interesting.
-
Using either a web cam on a laptop or a library video camera, record your commercial. One person has to be the camera person, the other is the actor. If there are 3 people, 2 can be actors.
-
Edit the movie using Moviemaker, save it and upload it to your backpack in Edmodo. This is to be no more than 30 seconds to 1 minute long!
